how we can increase voter turnout
ALLOW ONLINE REGISTRATION:
If more people are registered to vote, that means that more people will actually go and vote. So far, twenty-four states have took action, and twenty of those states have actually created online registration for voters, while four states have already passed the legislation needed to create the technology. In real life, sometimes there are problems with poll workers not being able to read the handwriting of the form, and if it was all online, this wouldn’t happen. All states should have online registration, and maybe even same day registration, so they can do it from the comfort of their home, but just in case there are questions about this process, they should be able to call a number to get help. Jon A. Husted and Wayne Williams, both politicians, have both called for online registration.
ALLOW ONLINE VOTING:
Countries such as Estonia have already implemented this method of voting, however, there is a privacy and security concern. If there was an option to vote online, there would be more ballots sent out, and the voter turnout would increase, and maybe even potentially become as high as it was 50 years ago. This voting could happen on weekends rather than on a weekday. Joe Kiniry is a principal investigator at a company called Galois, which focuses on computer science, is working on a project which is trying make online voting stable enough to use publicly.
INFORM PEOPLE:
A lot of people feel that they are not well informed about the two candidates and their campaigns which is why they decide not to vote that year. However, by doing this, they are giving up such an important right they have. The media is one thing that can get news around, and there are websites which have been created to get people more engaged in politics. We also have to make people realize that even if they don’t like either candidates, they should still vote one which they believe is the most suitable because their vote counts no matter what.
POPULAR VOTE:
States that didn’t receive as much campaign attention had a lower voter turnout, compared to those who got a lot of it. If every vote in every state is held on an equal level, then the turnout would be much higher since people would feel like their voice mattered and was valued. When other states are favored, people believe that campaigners do not care for these other states, and voters begin to rely on them to cast a vote. However, the more votes, the better it is, and when the popular vote wins, it is a lot more equal and fair.
MAKE VOTING MANDATORY/LAW:
Making voting a law would make it compulsory for everyone, and it would increase the voter turnout very drastically. An example of this would be in Australia - once they made it mandatory for everyone to go and vote, the percentages rose from 59% to 91%. If people didn’t go and vote, they would be fined an amount of money, and this is something America should look into doing because it would highly benefit us.
GET CELEBRITIES MORE INVOLVED:
For this year’s elections, celebrities like Katy Perry have been very involved with spreading the word about voting. There are actually many who didn’t vote themselves, and if we not only got them to vote, but they also contributed to promoting the act of voting, the voter turnout would be much higher. Celebrities have such a big impact on the media, and society in general because they are always in the public eye. You see them everywhere, and they should use their voice to their advantage by speaking up about how important voting is. Celebrities can create their own creative campaigns about voting to grab the audience’s attention.
TALKING ABOUT ISSUES:
Candidates sometimes try to appeal a certain group of the audience, and talk about things they will do to benefit that group. However, what some candidates fail to do is speak on matters that may benefit another group of people, such as the younger voters. Things like student debt, tuitions, and education may not be talked about as much as Social Security and Healthcare/Medicare. Politicians should try to incorporate many different issues, and not favor one group of people, but should appeal to voters as a whole. This will make more voters interested, thus increasing the voter turnout, since they will want to vote on things that they believe are important. In addition to this, presidents sometimes have a bias towards one religion or race, and a lot of their campaign will impact them negatively, which decreases the voter turnout.
If many of these suggestions were implemented, the rise of voter turnout would be very drastic and will help decide fairly who should become the next president.
